At the recently held 2023 Global Mining Business Development Forum, mining industry insiders called for mining enterprises to evolve toward sustainability, innovation, and international cooperation as the industry is facing great environmental and social challenges globally amid its rapid development.

In China, with the introduction of “dual carbon” goals, the “14th Five-Year Plan” (2021-2025) period becomes crucial for a comprehensive green transformation and ecological improvement. This phase marks a significant stage for the mining industry's transition toward green and high-quality development.

Li Buzou, Chairman of Zhejiang Huayue Mine Engineering Co., Ltd., stressed that mining enterprises should bear the responsibility to focus on innovation and technological advancements, utilizing resources in a more environmentally friendly and efficient manner.

During the forum, the Mining Committee of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Machinery and Electronic Products Industry (Preparatory Committee) also announced its establishment, aiming to create a platform for international mining cooperation.

“All members need to share knowledge, jointly develop new technologies, reduce environmental impact, enhance resource efficiency, collaborate, and strive for a more prosperous future of the mining industry,” Li said.

Chen Ruibin, former President of the Cangnan County Mining Industry Association and Zhejiang Fandu Mining Development Co., Ltd, also stressed the importance of the efforts to drive all mines towards digitalization and artificial intelligence, leveraging collaborative capabilities.

The goal is collective action, addressing industry issues, contributing ideas for industry development, and forging stronger collaborative relationships, he said.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative, while Chinese mineral companies' overseas business expansion has made remarkable progress.

Chen said that as Africa experiences rapid economic growth, the establishment of the Mining Committee could facilitate mining investments, innovative cooperation models, and enhanced cooperation capacity in Africa.

"We have business operations mining copper abroad, leveraging combined efforts in technology, funding, and personnel expansion," he said.

China is the world's largest mineral producer, consumer and trader. According to official data, the list of the world's top 50 mining companies includes 10 Chinese companies, two more than 2021 and the most from any country in the world.
