Through crowdfunding, a couple in Wuhan, Central China's Hubei Province, gathered carbon offset contributions from their friends and organized a carbon-neutral wedding during the National Day holidays, the groom surnamed Shen said on Monday.

According to Shen, his PhD research focused on bio-based polymer materials, which involves extracting monomers from cellulose to synthesize polymer materials. The bride studied global change ecology for her master's degree, so both of their current jobs are related to carbon neutrality. "Since we have such academic and professional backgrounds, why not we conduct a small experiment and make our wedding a carbon-neutral one?" This idea excited the couple.

A carbon-neutral wedding refers to a wedding where the total emissions of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, produced during the wedding process, are offset by tree planting, energy conservation and other methods. Therefore, it can also be metaphorically called a "zero-carbon wedding.""

After obtaining the consent of their parents, they were able to use their professional knowledge to distinguish three main areas in which carbon emissions occur during the wedding and made significant reductions throughout the wedding process. In the end, the couple purchased one ton of Hubei Province's carbon emission quota to complete this carbon-neutral wedding, becoming the first wedding in Wuhan to receive a carbon-neutral certification.
