The Italian Embassy in China inaugurated a series of events to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the death of Marco Polo on January 25.

Marco Polo, a Venetian explorer and merchant from the 13th century, embarked on an adventurous journey along the ancient Silk Road. Today, he is revered as an outstanding "cultural intermediary" between the East and West, and a symbol of Italian-Chinese relations, according to the post by the embassy.

Italian Ambassador to China, Massimo Ambrosetti, said at the event, "For China-Italy relations, Marco Polo has become a key figure in the paradigm of cooperation, connecting us for centuries, who is a vital symbol for strengthening the existing relations and promoting the future dialogue of the two countries."

The year 2024 holds particular importance for Italy-China cooperation, marking the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo's death and the 20th anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership.

The entire Italian diplomatic consular network aims to enhance relations through a diverse range of activities in various fields, with a particular emphasis on cultural exchanges, said the post.

Marco Polo's legacy stands as an invaluable source of inspiration for the establishment of new connections and fostering mutual understanding, making a positive contribution to cross-cultural dialogue between the two nations.

The renowned Italian television mini-series Marco Polo, directed by Giuliano Montaldo and produced by Italian broadcaster Rai, was screened at the event. With eight episodes in total, the series portrays the life story of Marco Polo through historical presentation and epic narration.
