In response to a question claiming that relevant departments of China and Japan on Thursday held the third negotiation on Japanese aquatic products exported to China, asking whether the negotiation gained positive progress and what prospects are for China to resume the import of Japanese aquatic products, Lin Jian, spokesperson from China's Foreign Ministry, said on Friday that the General Administration of Customs of China on Thursday was invited to conduct technical exchanges with the Japanese side on the safety of Japanese aquatic products, and the two sides exchanged in-depth views on how to strengthen the inspection and testing of aquatic products to ensure quality and safety.
Lin said the Chinese side noted that the resumption of imports of Japanese fishery products should be based on a series of scientific data from the Chinese side on the basis of continuous independent sampling and monitoring, and that the Japanese side should take practical measures to effectively safeguard the quality and safety of fishery products, which must meet the requirements of Chinese laws and regulations. The Japanese side expressed that it attaches great importance to the concerns of the Chinese side and the Chinese people, and reconfirmed that it will continue to carry out the international monitoring of the discharge and the independent sampling and monitoring of the stakeholder countries, and will ensure that the Japanese aquatic products exported to China are in line with the Chinese regulations.
Lin noted that China's position against Japan's unilateral initiation of the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water from Fukushima into the sea remains unchanged. We will continue to work with the international community to urge Japan to fulfill its commitments and ensure that the discharge of Fukushima-contaminated water is always under strict international supervision.
