When asked about comments on US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's claim that any attempt by China to "conquer Taiwan by force" would result in devastating consequences for the Indo-Pacific and the world at the Shangri-La Dialogue, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said on Wednesday that some in the US keep hyping up the so-called "China threat" and exaggerating tensions across the Taiwan Straits, which is an excuse to interfere in the Taiwan question and serves US political self-interests. We firmly oppose such claim, Zhu said.

The Taiwan question is purely China's internal affair and brooks no external interference, Zhu said. The US side should adhere to the one-China principle and the provisions of the three US-China joint communiqués, cease sending any wrong signals to the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces, and stop fanning flames in the region, Zhu noted.
