The Lao People's Armed Forces issued a statement on Saturday afternoon denying earlier media reports that claimed there had been clashes between Lao forces and Cambodian troops. Lao's official military newspaper stated that it had not received any such notifications, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Earlier Saturday, media outlets reported that the Lao military issued an emergency notice, stating that troops engaged in a fierce exchange of fire with several armed Cambodian individuals who had illegally crossed the border in the area between Champasak Province and Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani Province. Ten suspects were detained and weapons were confiscated, the reports said.
The screenshot circulating online was actually from a statement issued by the Lao military's special operations unit in Champasak Province on Friday, with its main content stating "During the clashes between Thai and Cambodian forces from Thursday to Friday, 10 artillery shells landed in Lao territory. It remains unclear which side fired them."
