Thailand and Cambodia on Thursday signed an agreement on border issue after an extraordinary meeting of the General Border Committee, according to a Thai representative, Xinhua News Agency reported.

When asked to comment on the reports regarding the Extraordinary Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) held in Malaysia on the afternoon of August 7, during which Cambodia and Thailand reached understanding on the monitoring mechanism and follow-up arrangements of the ceasefire, and China was invited to the meeting, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated on Thursday that, according to the understanding reached between Cambodian and Thai leaders in Kuala Lumpur on July 28, Cambodia and Thailand held an extraordinary GBC meeting and reached understanding on the implementation arrangements, monitoring mechanism and follow-up matters of the ceasefire, laying the foundation for realizing an effective ceasefire and cementing lasting peace between the two sides. China welcomes this, said the spokesperson.

The situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border continues to deescalate. This fully proves that dialogue and consultation is the right way to resolve disputes. China upholds a just and fair position, supports Cambodia and Thailand in enhancing communication and resolving differences properly, supports advancing political settlement through the ASEAN Way, and is ready to continue playing a constructive role for the peaceful settlement of the border disputes between Cambodia and Thailand, the spokesperson said.

Clashes broke out between Cambodia and Thailand in the border area on July 24, with both sides accusing each other of violating international law. Under the mediation of Malaysia, the two countries held talks on July 28 and agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire starting at midnight that day. They also agreed to convene a meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) to help restore peace and stability in the border region, according to CCTV News.

The GBC, which is taking place in Kuala Lumpur from August 4 to 7, serves as an essential platform for both countries to address and resolve issues concerning their shared border jointly, according to Thai government spokesperson Jirayu Huangsap, according to a report from Bernama, Malaysian national news agency.

The spokesperson also confirmed that observers from the US and China will also be present at the meeting, said the report.
