McDonald's China operations on Tuesday said that, the practice of the recruitment of retirees has existed for some time and that the company provides compensation and commercial insurance in compliance with Chinese government regulations.

The remarks came after the topic of "McDonald's recruiting retired employees" which has drawn broad attention online.

In a reply to Global Times, the company said it strictly implements its employment policies in accordance with legal provisions and government guidance, and pays social security contributions for full-time employees in accordance with the law.

"We also adopt a flexible and diverse employment model, which includes rehiring retirees and other contract employees. We provide them with compensation that complies with legal and policy regulations, as well as benefits such as commercial insurance," McDonald's China said.

McDonald's China is committed to providing all employees with a comprehensive compensation and benefits package that offers "security, benefits, and a future," as well as a safe, respectful, and inclusive work environment, the company noted.

Pictures circulated online showed that McDonald's is hiring retirees in China, saying that job requirements include being able to work at least three days a week and reaching retirement age (50 for women, 60 for men). Benefits include triple pay on national holidays, free meals on Saturdays, employee discounts, and commercial insurance.

McDonald's has a long-standing practice of hiring retired employees in China.

In September of 2022, Wuhan Evening News reported that McDonald's China recruited retired employees aged 50 and over, including women and men aged 60 and over. The notices were offered on a flexible work schedule, with employees working four to five days a week and four to eight hours a day, with a monthly salary of 1,800 yuan ($250.4) to 3,500 yuan, the news portal reported.
