According to Aero Engine Corporation of China, the first commercial unit of the AGT-110, China's most powerful homegrown heavy-duty gas turbine with a capacity of 110 megawatts, was delivered on Monday, Xinhua News Agency reported, quoting a source from the company.
This marks a new phase of commercial application for China's independently developed 110-megawatt heavy-duty gas turbine.
According to Xinhua, the heavy-duty gas turbine is a core piece of equipment for efficient energy conversion, clean utilization, and multi-sector applications. It is considered a key indicator of a nation's industrial strength as only a few countries in the world possess the capability to independently develop such technology, the report said.
According to an earlier report from chinanews.com, the AGT-110 can generate electricity using various fuels, including oil, natural gas, and medium-to-low calorific gases. It is applicable in multiple fields, such as combined heat and power, natural gas peak-load power plants, and combined cycle power generation, and can also be integrated with wind, solar, and hydropower sources for the state grid.
Compared to thermal power units of the same capacity, the 110-megawatt heavy-duty gas turbine can reduce carbon emissions by more than 1 million tons annually.
In combined cycle operation, it can generate over 150,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per hour, sufficient to meet the daily electricity needs of 15,000 households, chinanews.com reported. During the development course of the heavy-duty gas turbine, it has brought together expertise from multiple domestic industries including aviation, machinery, petroleum, and more.
To date, it has secured 102 patents and achieved breakthroughs in a series of core technologies, such as heavy-duty gas turbine designing, advanced material preparation, complete machine manufacturing, testing and commissioning. This effort has established a range of advanced research platforms with independent intellectual property rights for the design, development, testing, and commissioning of heavy-duty gas turbines, the report said.
Heavy-duty gas turbines have broad applications. With the rapid growth of China's gas-fired power generation capacity, the independent development of heavy-duty gas turbines holds significant strategic importance for achieving the "dual carbon" goals, ensuring national energy security, as well as promoting high-quality economic development, noted the report.
