Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun met with a delegation of the US House of Representatives led by Adam Smith, the current top Democrat on the US House Armed Services Committee, in Beijing on Monday.
Dong said that President Xi Jinping recently emphasized in a phone call with US President Donald Trump that China and the US can achieve mutual success and shared prosperity, benefiting both countries and the world, Xinhua reported.
It is hoped that the Congress members would eliminate disruptive factors and take constructive and pragmatic measures to contribute positively to improving military relations and promoting mutual progress between China and the US, Dong said.
The Chinese military is willing to build a military relationship with the US based on equality, respect, peaceful coexistence, and stable and positive development, while firmly safeguarding national sovereignty, security, and development interests, Dong said.
Both sides should ensure smooth military communication channels and take practical actions to promote stable, healthy, and sustainable development of bilateral military relations, said Dong, per Xinhua.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang met with the US congressional delegation in Beijing on Sunday, calling on the US Congress to view China and bilateral relations in a correct way, actively facilitate exchanges and cooperation, and play a constructive role in fostering China-US friendship and common development, according to Xinhua News Agency.
When meeting with the delegation from the US House of Representatives, Li noted that as China and the US are major countries with significant global influence, maintaining stable, sound, and sustainable development of bilateral relations serves the common interests of both sides and meets the expectations of the international community, per Xinhua.
The last visit by House representatives was in 2019. In October 2023, then majority-leader Chuck Schumer led a bipartisan delegation of US senators to China, according to Bloomberg.
In response to a media inquiry about a group of senior US House representatives arriving in China on Sunday for talks with the Chinese government, the first such official visit in six years, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said that China is willing to work with the US based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, and in the spirit of equality, respect and mutual benefit, enhance dialogue and exchanges in various fields and resolve each other’s concerns through communication.
“We hope the US will work with China in the same direction and jointly move the bilateral relationship forward along the right track,” said Guo.
“The visit of the delegation from the US House of Representatives helps to further advance high-level interactions between China and the US, including interactions at the levels of legislative bodies and political parties. The interactions help to further maintain the overall stability of current China-US relations,” Diao Daming, a professor at the Renmin University of China in Beijing, told the Global Times.
Due to their roles from the US House of Representatives, they may have perspectives on China-US relations that differ from those at the federal level, particularly from local viewpoints, Diao said. Engaging in communication with them could help gain an understanding of the focus areas regarding China-US relations at the local level in the US, said Diao.
