The mainland is following the Kuomintang (KMT) chairperson election, but it is an internal matter of the KMT. Comments made by some mainland netizens do not represent the official stance, Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office said on Wednesday during a press conference.

Chen emphasized that the 1992 Consensus clearly defines the nature of cross-Straits relations and serves as the political foundation for the development of cross-Straits ties, as well as the anchor of peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits. History has repeatedly proven that when both sides uphold the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, cross-Straits relations can improve and develop, bringing tangible benefits to people in island of Taiwan.

Conversely, denying the 1992 Consensus and deviating from the one-China principle will only lead to tension and turbulence in cross-Straits relations and harm the interests of Taiwan compatriots, said Chen.

Chen added that the mainland is willing, on the common political basis of adhering to the 1992 Consensus and opposing "Taiwan independence," to work with the new leadership of the KMT to advance relations between the two parties and across the Straits, so as to promote peace in the Taiwan Straits, well-being for compatriots, and rejuvenation for the Chinese nation.
