On November 11 local time, California Governor Gavin Newsom appeared at the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) and frequently referenced China during the event, according to Yuyuan Tantian, a social media account affiliated with state broadcaster China Central Television. In an interview with Yuyuan Tantian, Newsom said China is “at another scale” in tackling climate change.
They (China) see the economic opportunity of changing the way they produce and consume energy and they’re doing it at scale, says Newsom. He also said China is very strategic about it, according to the video published by Yuyuan Tantian.
China produces high quality goods and has partnerships sourcing around the globe and is driving technology, said the governor, according to the video by Yuyuan Tantian.
He also mentioned in the video that China has some of the highest quality electric vehicles in the world and are building market share, dominating in batteries, and increasingly in software and technology.
According to a post by CGTN Frontline on November 12 via its social media account, Newsom praised China’s competitiveness in clean technology, saying the country “deserves a lot of credit for not turning their back on climate change and climate policy.”
At an investors’ summit in São Paulo earlier in the week, Newsom described the absence of federal climate leadership as “jaw-dropping,” noting that US inaction risks ceding the booming clean energy market to China, Carbon Herald reported on November 11.
