China and Canada have reached a positive consensus on properly addressing each other's economic and trade concerns and further planning and expanding the roadmap for economic and trade cooperation, said Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, according to a statement on the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) website on Friday.

Wang made the remarks during a meeting with Canada's Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu in Beijing on Thursday. The trade and economic teams of China and Canada have conducted pragmatic and candid communications under the strategic guidance of the leaders of the two countries on China-Canada economic and trade relations as well as economic and trade issues of mutual concerns, according to the MOFCOM.

Both sides should continue to leverage the role of the China-Canada Joint Economic and Trade Commission as the main channel for promoting economic and trade cooperation and resolving differences, implement the outcomes of bilateral economic and trade consultations, explore new room for cooperation in various fields such as green and sustainable trade, e-commerce and trade promotion, facilitation of personnel exchanges, and multilateral and regional economic and trade, promote the continuous improvement and development of bilateral economic and trade relations, and contribute to the building of a new strategic partnership, Wang said.

Sidhu said that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's visit to China is of great historical significance, sending a clear and positive signal for cooperation between the business communities of the two countries.

The Canadian side is willing to develop Canada-China economic and trade relations with a pragmatic and constructive attitude, the Canadian official said, noting that the Canadian side hopes to further strengthen the role of the China-Canada Joint Economic and Trade Commission, and effectively address respective concerns, expand pragmatic cooperation and actively expand cooperation in areas including agriculture, energy and advanced manufacturing through this mechanism.
