Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning
The legitimate rights of the Palestinian people should be respected and protected. It is hoped that the relevant parties will stop actions that exacerbate tensions and intensify contradictions, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Friday, in response to foreign media’s inquiry on Israel passing a legislation widely known as the "death penalty for terrorists" law on Palestinians.
Israel's parliament on Monday approved a bill making the death penalty the default punishment for Palestinians in the West Bank convicted of "terrorism," a move that has drawn international criticism, Xinhua reported.
China holds that any legislation should comply with principles such as legality of crime and punishment, as well as fairness and justice. It should not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, nationality, or political views, Mao said, introducing China's position.
