A foreign journalist cited information from the Sri Lankan customs that on Thursday nine Chinese citizens were arrested at a Sri Lankan airport for attempting to smuggle telecommunications equipment, allegedly for use in online fraud. When asked for further information or comment, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that "I am not aware of the specific situation you mentioned. The Chinese government consistently requires Chinese citizens overseas to abide by local laws and regulations and refrain from engaging in any form of illegal or criminal activity."

Guo noted that China is willing to cooperate with relevant countries in international efforts to jointly combat criminal activities, including online fraud.
