The capital's vibrant art scene is set to bloom this May as the city is set to embrace the Beijing Art Season, a major cultural initiative featuring over 400 distinctive events that blend professional exhibitions, market activities and public engagement.

The season kicks off on May 21 with two flagship events at its core: Gallery Weekend Beijing and the Beijing Dangdai Art Fair. These will connect major art districts, museums, and professional galleries across the capital, transforming Beijing into a dynamic hub of creativity.

With the theme of "Art Gathers in Beijing, Harmony for All Directions," Guo Huaping, head of the Beijing 798 Culture Technology company behind the city's iconic 798 Art Zone, said that the art season aims to converge three key areas: professional art resources, urban art spaces, and public participation.

To this end, it will create integrated cultural spaces and diverse consumption scenarios, offering a rich mix of exhibitions, art transactions, city explorations, public aesthetic education, and cultural-tourism-commerce fusion.

Innovative elements include the use of cutting-edge digital technology to display artworks at various urban locations. Organizers have partnered with city museums and other vendors, using NFC ticket stubs to connect art experiences with consumers.

The year 2026 marks the China-Brazil Year of Culture, so the Art Season will feature dedicated Brazilian cultural exhibitions and exchange programs.

International cultural centers in Beijing, including the Instituto Cervantes, Danish Arts Center, Korean Cultural Center, and Goethe-Institut, will contribute diverse global content and interactive experiences.

The Beijing Dangdai Art Fair will run from May 21 to 24, bringing together 138 participating institutions from 21 countries and 47 cities worldwide. Notably, 39 galleries will make their debut during the fair, including international names such as Collecta (Vienna/Shanghai), Dashi Gallery (Moscow), Galerie Judin (Berlin), Meyer Riegger Wolff (Berlin/Paris/Seoul), and Form & Seasons Art Gallery (Dubai).

The artistic director and co-founder Bao Dong told the Global Times that this expansion reflects deeper connections within the art ecosystem and positions the expo as a platform that both drives and responds to developments in the art world.

The expo adopts the theme Land Trace, inspired by geopolitical and historical perspectives on cultural diversity and shared experiences across continents.

The Gallery Weekend Beijing will take place from May 22 to 31. The program includes special exhibitions and new units such as the "Art Visit Unit," "Public Unit," and "New Force Unit," promising fresh perspectives and emerging voices in the local and international gallery scene.
