FAW-GM Light Duty Commercial Vehicle Co Ltd, a 50-50 partnership between General Motors and China's FAW Group, has already put into operation its 200,000-capacity new plant in Changchun, Jiling Province, Xinhua News Agency reported Friday.

The new plant currently has an annual production capacity of 80,000 light commercial vehicles, including the pick-up, SUV, MPV and light bus. Pick-ups will be initially manufactured at the plant, followed by SUVs, light buses and other products from GM, and as demand increases in the world's largest auto market, the capacity will be expanded to 200,000 units.

The FAW-GM joint venture was established in August 2009, with a registered capital of 1.2 billion yuan ($176 million) and a total investment of 2 billion yuan. Based on FAW's existing production facilities in Changchun, the JV is also operated by Harbin Light Vehicle Co Ltd and Hongta Yunnan Automotive Manufacturing Co Ltd, according to GM's executive vice president Nick Reilly.

The FAW Group is one of the largest automotive groups in China, with substantial joint ventures with Volkswagen Group and Toyota Motor as well as extensive wholly-owned operations.
