General Motors has a shot at being the No. 1 automaker in the world again, as it reports worldwide sales last year came within 30,000. That could beat Japanese rival Toyota, which took a big hit after safety recalls.

GM expects to sell even more cars and trucks this year, putting it within reach of being the biggest automaker in the world, a title it held for 76 years before the company became mired in the financial crisis in 2008.

Analysts say the result is due to GM outselling Toyota in China, the world's biggest auto market and its US business also bouncing back. But GM executives, for their part, say they're focused on keeping customers happy, not on the title for number one spot.
