Toyota Motor Wednesday said it will recall nearly 1.7 million vehicles worldwide over a fuel leak risk, most of them in Japan.

The recalls include 1.28 million units of the Voxy, Noah and Isis minivans and RAV4 sport utility vehicles in Japan, 245,000 Lexus luxury cars in the United States, and 135,000 Avensis sedans in Europe.

The automaker said in a filing to Japan's transport ministry that no accidents had been reported related to the defects.

In the past year Toyota has recalled millions of vehicles worldwide over the safety issues involving brake and accelerator defects, tarnishing its reputation for quality.

The latest announcement brings the total number of recalled Toyota vehicles worldwide since late 2009 to more than 15 million.

On Monday, Toyota said its global sales in 2010 rose 8 percent to 8.418 million vehicles, narrowly beating the 8.39 million sold by General Motors to retain its title as the world's biggest automaker.
