If you frequent social media in China, you may have noticed a series of photos spreading everywhere recently: A young woman dressed in a white hanfu (traditional Chinese clothing) posing at Wat Rong Khun (also known as White Temple) in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. 'National Memory'

To try and present this part of history from multiple angles, the exhibition National Memory - Images of China in WWII from Overseas Collections has gathered a substantial amount of photos from organizations like the National Archives and Record Administration (NARA) in the US and personal photos from overseas Chinese who were involved in the war, as well as dozens of documentaries and movies. "The larger history was made up of countless individual memories. Paying attention to small details is a way to restore history. That's why we have collected smaller items. We want to help people to have a more comprehensive understanding of history," said Huang Liping, MoHI's executive director.

When I arrived at the village near Xiangzi's house, the young photographer had just finished photographing a couple somewhere in the village. Feet mudded, she led me to her house where it sat at the foot of the Zhongnan Mountains in Shaanxi Province. Her light steps and fluttering skirt made her seem like some image of a fairy.
