After Chinese media had reported BYD may purchase Maybach as soon as Daimler announces it would sell the luxury car brand, the German carmaker dismissed the rumor.

"Maybach is an important part of Daimler's product portfolio. There is no other decision," a Daimler spokesman said.

Daimler sold 200 units of the Maybach brand in 2009.

BYD Spokesman Paul Lin also denied the previous reports, "It's not true. It's market speculation."  He also denied BYD having any initial contact with Daimler on buying Maybach.

The two automakers have begun developing electric vehicles for the Chinese market.
