The Chinese doctor association and Beijing health authority on Wednesday strongly condemned violence against healthcare workers, after a doctor at an east Beijing hospital was murdered by a relative of one of her patients on Tuesday.

Doctor Yang Wen died early morning on Wednesday after being stabbed in the neck at Civil Aviation General Hospital Tuesday morning, the hospital announced on its Weibo account.

The Chinese Medical Doctor Association said that it is "beyond furious" in a statement published on Wednesday

"Words cannot express our fury over the senseless murder of an innocent doctor," it said.

The association is offering assistance to Yang's family, and has called on society to build a "safety net" to ensure the safety of medical staff. The Beijing Municipal Health Commission and medical staff at the hospital also expressed their deep condolences to Yang's family, and strongly condemned violence targeting doctors.

The suspect, a 55-year-old man surnamed Sun, is being held under criminal detention by Chaoyang district public security bureau, the Beijing Public Security Bureau announced. Yang's murder is not an isolated case of a doctor being attacked by patients or their relatives.

Chinese netizens including many doctors are calling on hospitals to install security checks and do more to prevent such tragedies.

More than 60 percent of the respondents to a poll on Sina Weibo, which asks if hospitals should install security checks, said they would support the move to help guarantee the safety of doctors.

More than 25 percent of respondents suggested hospitals should establish a blacklist banning people who have a record of abusing doctors.
