A Shaanxi woman was sentenced to 10 days in detention and fined 500 yuan ($76) on Tuesday for spreading rumors online about a deadly stampede at an amusement park, news portal thepaper.cn reported Wednesday.

The online posts said that "three children have been killed in a stampede, involving 5,000 people in Lewa Adventure, a local amusement park. And the park has started to evacuate visitors."

According to the report, police in Jingyang, Northwest China's Shaanxi Province traced the rumors to a 25-year-old woman, surnamed Zhang, who posted the rumors online using a pseudonym on Monday afternoon, via Baidu Tieba, a popular forum.

Lewa Adventure held a promotion on Monday in which visitors could enter the park for free, which led to long lines and people waiting for hours.

Lewa Adventure said on its official Sina Weibo account on Monday that "the stampede at Monday's event was a rumor," and though local police "helped guide the crowd," they didn't evacuate the park.

Police confirmed on Monday that they dispatched officers to help Lewa Adventure maintain order at 9 am Monday. By 10 am, the number of visitors surpassed 30,000, but no accidents occurred.

The park also noted that they would take legal measures against Zhang, as her behavior damaged the park's reputation.

The case is still under investigation, said police.
