A Chinese court in South China's Guangdong Province on Tuesday handed the death sentence to a Chinese national and a Canadian for selling and producing drugs in a large cross-border case that also resulted in various sentences for US and Mexican nationals.

The Jiangmen Intermediate People's Court sentenced a total of 11 people, including a Canadian, an American and four Mexicans, in the case involving 63.8 kilograms of methamphetamine and 365.9 grams of dimethyl amphetamine, according to a brief statement on the court's website.

The Canadian citizen, whose identity was not specified in the statement, and one Chinese national, identified as Wu Ziping, were found to have "organized and commanded" the operations and were sentenced to death, and their personal properties were confiscated.

"The drugs they sold and produced were of especially large quantity and their crimes were extremely serious," the statement said.

One American and four Mexicans, whose real names were not clear in the statement, also received various sentences from the case, including a death sentence with a two-year reprieve and life imprisonment.

It was not clear in the statement who was sentenced to death and who received life imprisonment.

Several other people, mostly Chinese nationals, were found to have played a "secondary" role in the case, received jail sentences.

The defendants could appeal the verdict to the Guangdong Higher People's Court within 10 days of the verdict.

In January this year, Dalian Intermediate People's Court in Northeast China's Liaoning Province sentenced Canadian Robert Lloyd Schellenberg to death for drug trafficking.
