Beijing will realize full 5G signal coverage on a highway to its co-host city of the 2022 Winter Olympics in the second half of the year.

The Beijing subsidiary of China Tower, undertaker of the highway 5G signal project, said the highway has a 75-km section in Beijing. The company has started to coordinate with China's three major telecom operators to install base stations for wireless 5G signal coverage along the route.

The highway will run through mountains in northern Beijing to the ski resort of Chongli in the city of Zhangjiakou, north China's Hebei Province.

In addition to the two-way, four-lane highway, Beijing is also building a high-speed railway line to facilitate the inter-city traffic between Beijing and Chongli, which will also boast 5G signals and wireless charging.

The 5G wireless network enables a large volume of data transmission to guarantee the communication demand during the major sports event.

According to the city's 5G development plan released in January 2019, Beijing plans to spend more than 30 billion yuan (around 4.4 billion US dollars) on building a 5G network in the city by the end of 2020.
