Wang Wenbin, spokesperson of China's Foreign Ministry

China firmly opposes official exchanges between the US and Taiwan island, and has lodged solemn representations with the US side in Beijing and Washington, the Chinese foreign ministry said, while urging the US not to send wrong signals to Taiwan secessionists.

The Taiwan question is the most important and sensitive issue in China-US relations, and the one-China principle is the political foundation of China-US relations, Wang Wenbin, spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said at Wednesday's media briefing.

We urge the US side to abide by the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, stop all forms of official exchanges with Taiwan, and not send wrong signals to Taiwan secessionists to avoid undermining China-US relations and the stability of the Taiwan Straits, Wang said.

Any attempt to ignore, deny or challenge the one-China principle will end in failure, Wang said.

Wang's remarks came amid reports that US Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar will lead a delegation to visit Taiwan island.
