China wishes a speedy recovery to the ill Australian expeditioner at the research station in the Antarctica, and is willing to extend a helping hand, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Thursday.

The Australian Antarctic Program earlier reported one of its expedition team is suffering from a medical condition not related to COVID-19.

Responding to the rescue operation of the Australian patient, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said at a routine media briefing on Thursday that China has been closely following the matter and is coordinating with relevant authorities to assist the rescue plan.

"We sincerely wish him a speedy recovery," Wang said.

Kim Ellis, the Australian Antarctic division director, expressed heartfelt gratitude toward the countries that provided timely support, saying that the operation "is a testament to the strong international cooperation that exists in Antarctica, where nations band together and support each other in what can be a hostile and challenging environment."
