Beijing’s Shunyi district goes into coronavirus wartime mode with community lockdowns and mass testing

Following reports of two confirmed locally transmitted COVID-19 cases in Beijing on Friday, with patients involved residents in Shunyi ditrict of Beijing,  Shunyi local health authorities say they will test 800,000 residents over the weekend. 

On Friday, two residents of Shunyi district of Beijing were confirmed to be suffering symptoms of COVID-19 and five close contacts tested positive for the virus on Saturday.

Zhi Xianwen, a Shunyi district official told a press briefing on Saturday that the district will conduct the mass nucleic acid testing and had already completed taking samples from 119,918 residents as of 12:30 pm on Saturday.

Xidulan and Donghaihong villages, located just outside the Sixth Ring Road in Shunyi district, are now under lockdown, Zhi said.

Pang Xinghuo, a Beijing CDC official, told the news briefing that there is a possibility new cases will be found. 

Workers in key services, including cold-chain logistics, delivery, ride hailing and public health are now required to wear masks, Pang said.
