Over the past few years, there had been too many obstacles put up in the China-US relationship, with many bridges burned down and roads damaged, while US President Joe Biden has called for unity and healing which are greatly needed for China-US ties, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said during a routine press conference on Thursday.

Hua said she noticed that many US media outlets called the inauguration ceremony a new day in US history, and that she had also watched the inauguration process and the fireworks lighting up the sky at night. "I had some feelings, as the past period was not easy for us, which was highly challenging and unusual," she said, "But both Chinese and American people deserve a better future."

The spokesperson said China hopes President Biden will have a successfulgovernance. She noted that when it comes to the China-US relationship, there are a few anti-China political figures who have acted in their own private interests, made up so many lies and instigated so much hatred and divergence. People from both countries suffered from that, and many have called for the relationship to return to the normal track.

"The Trump administration, especially [former secretary of state] Mike Pompeo, set up too many obstacles in bilateral ties, burned down too many bridges and damaged too many roads. Both countries need to have the courage to listen to each other, respect each other and treat the relationship properly, which would be in line with the expectations of the international community," Hua said.

The senior Chinese diplomat emphasized that if we are determined to do this, anything is possible, and she noted, "Let the good angels come back to bless the bilateral ties and prevail, defeating the evil forces through the joint efforts of the two sides."
