China has the ability to administer over 20 million doses a day if needed, China’s leading immunologist said, as China accelerates its vaccination rate amid an epidemic flare-up.

“The public has no need to worry about the country’s vaccine supply. Our vaccines are sufficient and production capacity will be gradually released. Nationwide daily administered doses can surpass 20 million if needed,” Shao Yiming, China’s leading physician-scientist and immunologist serving at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, told Chinese media.

China is pushing ahead with its national vaccination campaign with an average of more than 10 million doses administered per day. The daily number has increased, especially after a new case was discovered in East China's Anhui Province on May 13, as more people realize the importance of vaccines for self-protection.

Administered doses nationwide exceeded 15 million on Monday, a new daily high.

As China gradually expands vaccine supplies, China’s speed in administering vaccines will continue to rise. The country is expected to achieve herd immunity by the year end, according to Shao.

China has provided more than 200 million doses to more than 80 countries including Brazil, Chile and Indonesia, demonstrating China’s commitment to making Chinese vaccines a public good.
