Update: Fudan University condoles death of teacher, criticizes online speculations on case

Fudan University on Thursday expressed great condolences to the death of its teacher Wang Yongzhen, and criticized online speculations on the tragegy and groundless attacks against the victim when course of the incident was unclear.

The School of Mathematical Sciences of Fudan University on Tuesday said that Wang Yongzhen, Secretary of Party Committee of the school, was killed.

Police in Shanghai said a college teacher on Monday was arrested for allegedly stabbing his colleague with a knife. 

They identified the suspect as a man surnamed Jiang, while the victim, surnamed Wang, who is Jiang's colleague, died at the scene.

Jiang claimed he held a grudge against Wang due to work and stabbed him, according to police.   

The Global Times learned that Fudan University is located in Handan Road in Shanghai. Several Fudan University students told the Global Times that the incident took place on their campus.

The School of Mathematical Sciences posted condolences for Wang on its website, saying his death was a great loss to the school. The website has turned to black and white to mourn the victim.

The university has set up a working group to fully cooperate with the police in their investigations.
