As the Euro 2020 drew the curtain with Italy beating England to win the championship amid cheers, shouts and cries early Monday morning, various football-related topics trended on Chinese social media platforms. 

According to statistics, despite Portugal's early loss, the star that Chinese fans follow and love the most is Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo who won the Golden Boot at Euro 2020 on Sunday.

The topic “Cristiano Ronaldo is the star of most concern among Chinese football fans” has been viewed about 36 million times on Chinese Twitter-like social media platform Sina Weibo as of press time.

Ronaldo won the Golden Boot at Euro 2020 on Sunday, continuing a tournament of records for the Portugal captain, foreign media on sports reported, noting his Golden Boot was made official after Italy beat England in a penalty shootout to win the Euro.

Floods of Chinese netizens rushed to send congratulations to the Golden Boot winner.

Another topic “More than 60 percent of Euro Cup fans gave up staying up late and chose to watch replays” has also gained attention. The topic has amassed more than 7 million views.

Statistics showed that 7 am (Beijing time)is the peak time Chinese users accessed the official Euro Cup applet.

A Beijing-based football fan surnamed Zhang, 40, told the Global Times on Monday that although he really wanted to watch the midnight game, he was tired and fell asleep on his sofa. He was one of the people who watched a replay at around 7 am. “Overdue news of Italy’s victory did not stop my prompt cheers!” Zhang noted.

Another Shanghai-based fan surnamed Liu, 25, said she stayed up with her boyfriend in order to experience the excitement of watching the game live.
