A 4-month-old baby girl in Wangzongdian village, Central China's Henan Province, was rescued after being trapped under a collapsed house. Unfortunately, her mother was found dead on Thursday night.

While storm-ravaged Zhengzhou downgraded its emergency response level on Thursday after days of rainfall, and started to clean up debris and mud, heavy rains continued to pound other parts of the province. The death toll has climbed to 33 and 8 still missing as of press time on Thursday.

The baby girl was trapped for one day and was finally rescued by emergency responders. However, her mother and another woman were found dead under the house rubble.

The baby girl's uncle surnamed Zhao told Jimu News that rescue machinery and crews rushed to the village to clear and search the collapsed house of his brother and found a woman buried in the rubble on Thursday afternoon. The woman was their neighbor. Rescue workers found the baby's mother soon after.

The floods have affected more than 3 million people across the province and forced 37,600 to be evacuated. More than 215,200 hectares of crops have been damaged causing a direct economic loss of about 1.22 billion yuan ($188.6 million). Zhengzhou is still struggling to fully restore power and some people are still stranded due to sporadic inundations. Rainfall recorded late Wednesday made the situation more difficult.
