Epidemic continues to simmer as E China's Yangzhou reports 54 infections

Epidemic in Yangzhou, a city in East China's Jiangsu Province, continues to simmer, authorities said as the city has registered 54 confirmed COVID-19 infections and two asymptomatic cases as of Monday. 

According to the press conference on Monday, Yangzhou had reported 26 more confirmed cases on Sunday, bringing the total to 54. 

Wu Zhenglong, the provincial governor, said on Sunday that this round of the epidemic in Yangzhou was detected relatively late, it's limited to certain environments and has mainly affected the elderly, stressing that the epidemic situation in the city in grave. 

The COVID-19 infections in Nanjing's Lukou Airport ignited this round of the epidemic resurgence, which then spread to other cities including Yangzhou. Many who contracted COVID-19 in the city had been to chess rooms.

Local health authorities said Yangzhou is ramping up efforts to track down close contacts. By Monday morning, the main urban district of Yangzhou tested more than 1.4 million people. 

The city has registered one high-risk region and 14 medium-risk regions at the time of writing. 

Amidst the epidemic resurgence, Yangzhou has a new mayor, Wang Jinjian, replacing Zhang Baojuan.
