Beijing's Dongcheng District People's Court on Tuesday sentenced a woman to seven months in jail for her defaming PLA hero and martyr Dong Cunrui. The court also ordered the woman to extend a formal apology on state level media.

The woman, surnamed Xu, posted two pieces of information containing contents defaming Dong Cunrui on China's twitter-like Weibo platform, which received more than 90,000 reads, triggering broad outrage and causing very bad social impact.

Xu acknowledged her guilt in court.

The Heroes and Martyrs Protection Law took effect in May 2018. Under the law, those who insult or slander heroes and martyrs will be punished. The names, images, reputation and honor of heroes and martyrs are protected by the law. Dong Cunrui was a PLA soldier who detonated explosives he was holding to damage an enemy bunker, sacrificing himself in 1948.
