Shanxi, crippled by heavy flooding, receives $65.7 million rescue funds

More than 423 million yuan ($65.7 million) in funds has been allocated and used for emergency rescue efforts in North China's Shanxi Province, where heavy rainfall and floods have affected over 1.76 million people, Shanxi authorities said during a press conference on Monday.

The floods have caused huge economic damage to the province. As of Sunday, over 6,500 kilometers of roads were damaged in Shanxi, including 6 kilometers of expressway and 5,524 kilometers of rural roads. Among the damaged rural roads, 3,238 places have been suspended, according to Shanxi authorities.

So far, among all the 3,347 road points suspended due to the floods, 3,225 sites have continued their operations normally, and 16 blocked points on railways have resumed normal work.

As a coal hub in China with more than 670 mines scattered in the province, production of 60 mines were suspended due to the flooding which has caused coal supply bottlenecks. So far, 57 coal mines have resumed production. 

Among those 167 tourist attractions shut down due to the heavy rain, 126 have reopened to the public.

There remain 836 temporary resettlement sites in the province, providing accommodation for 21,000 people, are affected by the disaster. Of the 71 schools that failed to resume classes after the National Day holidays, 46 have resumed classes.

Food water in 226 villages in Taiyuan, Jinzhong and Yuncheng and other cities have been drained, with a total of 2,171 different drainage equipment put into use, Shanxi authorities said on Monday.

The autumn grain harvest in the province has extended to 20.28 million mu (1.35 million hectares), and acreage of autumn sowing has reached 958,000 mu.
