10,000 families in East China's Jinan receive emergency kit, 'part of city's program to serve citizens'

A total of 10,000 families in Jinan, East China's Shandong Province have won the envy of many netizens after receiving a special gift from the city's office of civil air defense - an emergency kit including fire blanket, medical kit and escape rope. 

The Jinan Office of Civil Air Defense on Tuesday said that offering these emergency kits is a part of the city's program to "solve the practical matters for the people."

In the past few days, photos of emergency kits shared by netizens in Jinan have drawn public attention. As is shown in the pictures, these desert camouflage colored emergency kits that contain a fire blanket, medical kit, escape rope, N95 face mask, multi-functional emergency flashlight, long-lasting candles, waterproof matches, combat medical kit, three-in-one emergency whistle, non-slip wear-resistant gloves, as well as emergency manual and emergency contact card. 

According to the local authorities, the emergency kit is suitable for emergency self-help and mutual aid in case of air raids or natural disasters or emergencies such as earthquakes, fires and traffic accidents. 

Many netizens who have received the kit expressed their surprise toward the gift and praise for the Jinan city government. 

"The package is particularly complete with practical tools. The quality is also very good," some netizens wrote on China's Twitter-like platform Sina Weibo.

According to the announcement of Jinan government, the city's has started the registration for citizens to apply for emergency kits in September. 

Media reports say that Jinan has offered similar emergency kits in previous years. This year's content adjustments include replacing the filtered breathing mask with a fire extinguishing blanket and replacing the multifunctional safety hammer with an emergency tool kit, making the kits more applicable.

Moreover, some other cities in China, including Xi'an in Northwest China's Shaanxi Province and Guangzhou in South China's Guangdong Province, have also released a suggested list of household emergency supplies to the public and encouraged them to actively stockpile household emergency supplies to further enhance their ability to avoid and save themselves from emergencies.

On Monday, China's Ministry of Commerce released a statement suggesting families store an appropriate amount of essential daily necessities for "emergency need," to which official media outlets and experts urged the public to not read too much into or wrongly interpret the sentence taken out of a statement on efforts to ensure stable food supplies and prices.
