Five officials were dismissed and another five were punished in South China's Guangzhou for dereliction of duty in felling large amounts of trees in the city.

The large-scale removal and felling of trees in Guangzhou damaged a bunch of ancient trees, leading to the damages on natural ecological environment and historical features of the city and hurting memories and feelings of residents of the city, according to a news release on Sunday by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI).

This typical destructive construction has caused negative effects and irreparable losses. It is a profound lesson to learn, the notice reads.

Lin Daoping, deputy mayor, and Liu Xianrong, head for Bureau of Forestry and Landscaping of Guangzhou Municipality, are among the five officials that were dismissed.
