A spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that China welcomes and supports United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' call for nations to observe the Olympic Truce amid the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.

Guterres issued a statement on Monday urging the world to "build a culture of peace" through the power of sport. He said the appeal calls on all parties to observe a ceasefire throughout the course of the upcoming Olympic Winter Games.

The Olympic Truce has a long history, which embodies humankind's pursuit of peace and mutual assistance. It is also in line with the UN's original mission to maintain international peace and security, Zhao Lijian, the spokesperson, said.

The 76th Session of the UN General Assembly adopted by consensus the resolution on the Olympic Truce for Beijing 2022, which demonstrates the confidence of the international community in China's hosting of the event and brings together the strength of the aspiration of people around the world, Zhao said.

China has always adhered to its commitment to peace and multilateralism, and has supported the cause of the UN. China calls for all countries to take Beijing 2022 as an opportunity to resolve differences via dialogue, replace confrontation with cooperation, increase mutual understanding and promote world peace and development, Zhao noted.

China is confident that it can work with other parties to follow the Olympic spirit of more unity and take the Games as an opportunity to move toward a peaceful and better future.
