Foreign leaders express condolences over China Eastern Airlines plane crash

Leaders of many countries and international organizations, as well as foreign ministries and their embassies in China, expressed condolences and sympathies after the crash of China Eastern Airlines flight MU5735 on Monday with 132 people on board.

A China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737 crashed en route from Kunming, the provincial capital of South China's Yunnan Province, to Guangzhou, the provincial capital of South China's Guangdong Province, with 123 passengers and nine crew members on board. 

After the incident, the government and relevant departments immediately sent several working teams to the scene to carry out rescue work. As of Tuesday noon, no missing person has been found.

"The Secretary-General is very saddened by the news of the crash of China Eastern Airlines Flight MU5735," said Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, at a news briefing on Monday. 

"We extend our condolences to the families of the victims and the Chinese government and people," the UN said in its official statement.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed condolences to Chinese President Xi Jinping over the China Eastern Airlines plane crash, the Kremlin said on its website on Monday. Putin said Russia sympathizes with the grief of those who lost relatives and friends in the tragedy.

The Russian Embassy in China also expressed condolences over the crash on Weibo, the Chinese twitter-like social media platform, and changed its profile photo to black and white.

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan tweeted on Monday that he was deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life in the crash of a Chinese passenger plane. "We share the grief of our Chinese brothers and sisters and convey our deepest condolences and sympathies with the bereaved families," the Prime Minister said.

"Deeply shocked and saddened to learn about the crash of the China Eastern Airlines Flight," said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the crash and their family members."

Other foreign leaders including British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also expressed condolences over the tragedy.

Besides, the diplomatic agencies of Iran, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, the US, Turkey, Italy, Israel, Canada, Sweden, and other countries also expressed condolences and sympathies over the accident.
