Officials from the local power department in Chengdu, capital of Southwest China's Sichuan Province, said on Monday that strange black circles in the sky photographed earlier by local residents were caused by a malfunction in the electrical facilities, according to media reports.

On Monday, several local residents in Chengdu photographed black circles in the sky and were very curious about this phenomenon, which attracted more than 720,000 views on the Chinese social media platform Sina Weibo.

Some netizens claimed that the black circles were caused by a failure of a local power facility in Chengdu, and then contacted the local power department staff to confirm the situation.

"The equipment was under heavy load and the cooling oil temperature was too high, which caused the failure," said local officials in an interview with the media.

"We hope relevant departments pay attention to safety and do a good job of analyzing the facility failure so as to prevent such incidents from happening again," one Weibo user commented.
