The parents of a candidate of the national college entrance exams, or gaokao, in Nantong, East China's Jiangsu Province, accidentally set fire to a mattress after leaving incense sticks burning to pray for the candidate to get good marks in the exams.

On the first day of gaokao on Tuesday, the parent assumed that the incense stick was not big enough to cause a fire and thus left it lit after finishing praying for the candidate.

It was the tiny stick of incense that ignited the mattress and caused the fire, and the parent remembered that there was cash hidden under the mattress after the room caught fire.

Firefighters rushed to the scene to put out the blaze and rummaged through the rubble of the bedroom to find some cash that was not completely burned, helping the parent recover some of the damage. Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire.
