US arms sales and military technical support to the Taiwan region has gravely undermined China's sovereignty and security interests, as well as the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, said spokesperson of China's Ministry of National Defense on Thursday when asked for comments on US' approval on Wednesday of up to $120 million worth of naval ship spare parts and related technical support to the island.

The US has seriously violated the one-China principle and the three China-US Joint Communiqués, especially the August 17 Communiqués, said Tan Kefei, a spokesperson at China's Ministry of National Defense, urging the US to immediately cancel the arms sales to the Taiwan region, cut their military ties and stop sending the wrong signal to "Taiwan independence" secessionist forces before further harm is done to China-US relations.

Tan warned the island's Democratic Progressive Party and certain external forces of the firm and robust measures the People's Liberation Army will take to resolutely safeguard China's sovereignty and security interests.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council have also lashed out at the possible arms sales from the US on the same day, urging Washington to stop playing with fire over the Taiwan question. Observers warned that such military support could only worsen the situation in the Taiwan Straits instead of enhancing the island's combat preparedness.
