A man from Tangshan, North China's Hebei Province was apprehended by the local police for knocking down his girlfriend in a car and repeatedly running her over until she was dead on Tuesday.

The suspect surnamed Zhang hit and ran over the woman surnamed Wang by driving a car in front of a local swimming pool around Tuesday noon over certain disputes, according to a statement released by the local police on Tuesday afternoon.

Zhang fled the scene after the incident and Wang was rushed to hospital but still died despite of emergent rescue.

The video clips circulating on the internet show a horrible scene in which Zhang knocked down Wang by driving a white SUV at the parking lot before passersby attempted to move Wang to a safer location.

However, Zhang drove the car and rushed toward the passersby and ran over the woman lying on the ground repeatedly. Even a car parking beside the woman was pushed to move by Zhang's vehicle.

A huge circle trail suspected of blood was left on the ground where Zhang's car passed.

Zhang was captured by the local police around 3pm on Tuesday and the case is still under further investigation, according to the police statement.

A worker from the swimming pool told the media that Wang was a staffer from the swimming pool. Before the incident, Wang had been working as usual.

The topic of the incident trended on China's Twitter-like Sina Weibo on Tuesday afternoon and stirred a public outcry for a thorough inspection, with many netizens criticizing the brutality of the suspect and questioning the governance of the local authorities, since the harassing and beating incident against women at a local barbecue restaurant happened just in June had sparked outrage on Chinese social media platforms with a focus on the protection of women and safeguarding public security.
