Police found a stall selling scepters, which look like state-protected animal products, at an open market in Beijing on Monday. After several days of investigation, the police determined that the stalls are narwhal's long teeth productions.

After getting enough evidence, the police arrested the stall's owner, surnamed Zhang, and seized 19 narwhal teeth in his store. The 19 long teeth were identified as narwhal teeth, and the money involved in the case is more than 4.9 million yuan($702,267). At present, Zhang has been detained on suspicion of harming rare and endangered wild animals.

The protruding canine teeth from the narwhal's left upper jaw, which can reach up to 3 meters in length, are very important to narwhals' lives. Normally males' long teeth are more prominent than that of females, which are used to attract females and gain access to mates. The teeth also determine their status in the group, and work as sensors to help narwhal forage for food and breathe.

Some netizens expressed their anger toward the illegal actions while others commented that the police were very professional as they could recognize the rare products quickly and stopped the sordid business effectively.
