The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Monday that it firmly supports the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government in performing its duties in accordance to the law, and any attempts to smear China and interfere in China's internal affairs under the pretext of the political incident in 1989 won't succeed.

The ministry's spokesperson made the statement in response to a question concerning Hong Kong police reportedly arresting dozens of people on Sunday for breaching the public order while the Consulate General of the US and the Consulate General of Canada made similar remarks on social media showing the so-called support for upholding "human rights."

"Regarding the political incident that occurred in the late 1980s, the Chinese government has already made a clear conclusion," Wang Wenbin, spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said at a press conference.

We firmly support the HKSAR government in performing its duties according to the law, and firmly support all efforts to maintain national security and the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong, Wang noted. "I would also like to emphasize that any attempts to smear China and interfere in China's internal affairs under this pretext will not succeed."

The Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China in the HKSAR also slammed certain US politicians and consulates general of the US and Canada in Hong Kong for staging such "poor political farce by manipulating human rights issues."

A spokesperson from the office firmly opposed and strongly condemned such acts of "chiming in with" some anti-China figures that aroused chaos in Hong Kong, attempting to provoke incidents, interfere in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs, according to a statement on the website of the office on Sunday night.

The great achievements made in the more than 70 years since the founding the PRC fully demonstrated the development path chosen by China is completely correct and firmly supported by the people, the spokesperson said.

Few external intervention forces are willing to be a clown, insisting on rehashing events that have been concluded, splashing dirty water on China, tripping Hong Kong, plotting to create opposition, incite confrontation, and playing the old tricks of ideological infiltration and peaceful evolution that have long been seen through, the spokesperson said. "It's pure arrogance, and it is doomed to be swept into the dustbin of history!"

The office also urged those foreign forces and Hong Kong-based institutes of the US and certain countries to adhere to international law and the basic norms of international relations, abide by the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, immediately stop their futile political manipulation.

They should abandon their delusions of causing chaos in Hong Kong and containing China as soon as possible, and refrain from interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs in any form, the spokesperson said. Otherwise, they will inevitably face a powerful backlash from 1.4 billion Chinese people, the spokesperson added.
