A company in Chengdu, Southwest China's Sichuan Province, implemented a bonus reward system to encourage employees to lose weight, with bonuses scaled by goal difficulty, ranging up to several thousand yuan. To date, nearly 200,000 yuan ($27,380) in total bonuses has been distributed.

The incentive fund for weight loss, introduced by a Chengdu-based company, has been operational for several years, allowing employees meeting set targets to claim financial rewards, news outlet Jiupai News reported.

Only overweight employees, as determined by their Body Mass Index (BMI), are eligible to participate.

Qualified employees set individual weight loss targets through signed agreements with the company, said the report.

Bonuses are tiered based on difficulty of losing weight, ranging up to several thousand yuan. However, if an employee's weight rebounds within the specified time period, they are required to return the bonus.

According to an employee, the company has long prioritized staff well-being, aiming to promote healthy habits and raise wellness awareness.

"Beyond weight loss incentives, we also offer fitness reward policies in our company," the employee said. Employees of any weight can sign a fitness agreement with performance-based benchmarks, earning bonuses upon goal completion, the employee noted.

While acknowledging the program's challenging targets and low success rates, the company emphasized that they will adjust the policy based on results, with the overall goal to encourage employees to enjoy a healthy life.
