Chinese diplomats hold back-to-back meetings with Indian, Pakistani envoys in two days: FM

Senior Chinese diplomats have held back-to-back meetings with Indian and Pakistani ambassadors to China in two consecutive days, according to press releases published on the website of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.  

Chinese Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Sun Weidong met with Pakistani Ambassador to China Khalil Hashmi at the latter's request on Tuesday and the two sides had an exchange of views on China-Pakistan relations as well as international and regional situations, according to a press release on Wednesday.

Sun said that China welcomes and supports a full and lasting ceasefire between Pakistan and India, and advocates that the two sides resolve their differences through dialogue and consultation and jointly commit to maintaining regional peace and stability. China is willing to continue to play a constructive role in this regard, the vice minister said.

Hashmi expressed his appreciation for China's mediation efforts in promoting the ceasefire and peace, according to the press release. 

A day earlier, on Monday, Director-General of the Department of Asian Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Liu Jinsong met with Indian Ambassador to China Pradeep Kumar Rawat, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a press release published on Tuesday.

The two sides had an exchange of views on bilateral relations and issues of common interest and concern, according to the press release.

The meetings came after India and Pakistan reached a ceasefire. Asked to comment on the ceasefire during a regular press briefing on Monday, Lin Jian, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said that the ceasefire between India and Pakistan is in the fundamental and long-term interest of both countries, and is conducive to regional peace and stability. 

"China hopes that India and Pakistan will cement and continue the ceasefire momentum, avoid further conflict, properly handle differences through dialogue and negotiation, and return to the track of political settlement. China is ready to stay in communication with India and Pakistan and play a constructive role in realizing a full and lasting ceasefire between the two countries and keeping the region peaceful and stable," Lin said.
