A 24-year-old woman, surnamed Zhou, was fatally stabbed in Langfang, North China's Hebei Province on February 26, 2025, prompting local police to swiftly detain a 33-year-old male suspect, who was later diagnosed with schizophrenia and deemed criminally not responsible at the time of the attack, according to a police statement released on Friday.
Following the arrest of the suspect, surnamed Xie, authorities observed abnormal behavior and incoherent speech, prompting the local public security bureau to commission a professional forensic psychiatric evaluation. The assessment concluded that Xie was suffering from schizophrenia and had no criminal responsibility at the time of the incident, said the statement.
Xie has been transferred to a psychiatric hospital for mandatory treatment under supervision.
Recently, the victim's family requested a re-evaluation of Xie's mental state. In response, the police have initiated a new forensic assessment in accordance with relevant procedures. The case remains under further investigation.
According to earlier reports by China News Service, Zhou Yi, a kindergarten teacher, was fatally stabbed 13 times by an unknown man on February 26 while walking home from work.
