Twenty-six Xiasi dogs, an indigenous breed of Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, Southwest China's Guizhou Province, have undergone training under the guidance of police canine trainers.
The dogs are scheduled to take their certification exams in November, China Central Television (CCTV) News reported.
At a police training ground in Xiasi town, Guizhou, a group of Xiasi dogs are being trained in tracking, bite work, and obstacle navigation under the guidance of police canine trainers, according to the report.
Xiasi dogs are known for their speed, exceptional stamina, explosive power, and strong hunting instincts, according to CCTV News.
Yang Jinghua, head of the police canine unit at the local public security bureau, said the most notable advantage of Xiasi dogs is their ability to continue working even after 30-60 minutes of intense exercise.
They have an acute sense of smell, showing strong tracking abilities from as early as 3 to 4 months old, Yang added.
In June last year, a Xiasi dog named Little White Dragon became the first of its breed to be registered in China’s national police dog system, according to the report.
This year, three more Xiasi puppies joined the training program, with the youngest only two months old, CCTV News said. Currently, 26 Xiasi dogs are receiving specialized police training at the facility and are scheduled to take their certification exams in coming November.
